Switcharoo De-Rejected! In the Catalog! PDF Print E-mail

So, it is the day before thanksgiving, and I am just stressing about being ready for the holiday, and what do you know but I get an email letting me know that after the stress and worry, Switcharoo is going to be released today. Today! This is so exciting I can hardly stand it.

While there was much craziness that happened after the initial rejection, (another rejection because of a name issue conflicting with the original app, etc) The good folks Palm actually worked hard to try to get them all resolved and help us get Switcharoo out there.

And now it is! glorious day!  We will see how popular it is to see if it is worth continued efforts. What kind of ideas do we have for this app? Well, maybe provide a way for people to pick images on their phone to add to a personal wallpaper list, something that would not use the MediaDB, and so would not break the rules. Perhaps have a way for people to pick their favorites from the downloaded wallpapers that can be added to a "Favorites" category.

Maybe even come up with a way to pull images from other on-line galleries like Picasa or Flikr. But that is all in the future, and dependent on how many downloads this bad-boy gets.

But I still can't help it. I am just giddy that it is there in the catalog. Look, that's my app!

Well, it is not the full version. But we are making progress. We have the demo version in the catalog, so the full one should be right behind. (Right, Palm? Right?)

We  completely reworked the way it handles images, and made a new image-download service class, and made it so it doesn't use the local images at all. Works great, and no more using invalid API calls that make Palm all nervous.

Yip-yip-yahoo! Super Sudoku is in the official Palm-Catalog. Well... the demo version is anyway. After all the trouble with Switcharoo, Super Sudoku beat it there. Fun times!

We have submitted the full version (Without the multi-player stuff yet, cause it just aint ready) but no word as of yet. The demo only includes one puzzle per difficulty level, so people will probably be itching to get the full version as soon as possible.

Switcharoo "Rejected!" PDF Print E-mail

rejectedSo this morning the status of Switcharoo changed from "Being reviewed" to "Rejected". What a roller-coaster. It was almost 2 months ago that we first submitted it, then nothing happened until after Palm's e-commerce app catalog opened and the status finally changed from "Queued for review" to "Being reviewed".

But then it disappeared from Palm's submission portal. It was just gone. We found out this was a bug in the portal, and not to worry, it was still in there somewhere. And, sure enough, a week or so later it showed up again.

But now, after several more weeks of waiting, we finally know for sure. We don't have specific information as to why it was rejected, but honestly this is not a surprise.  What would have been a surprise is if they had accepted it. Switcharoo has two problems. 1) It uses undocumented API calls, the type we had to dig into palm's code to figure out how to use.  They don't really like that because those calls are not yet locked down and could change with any OS update and break our app. 2) A couple of the calls required us to change our app ID to com.palm.app.switcharoo to make it work. Palm specifically designed some of the calls to NOT be available to 3rd party developers for security reason. And the only way to get around that was to fool the Pre into thinking our app was an official Palm app.

Who knows. We may be able to negotiate with Palm and talk them into letting this bad-boy in. Or perhaps the next update to the OS and API will open up the calls we have been using. But even if not, we have plans. There is a new feature of the API that allows you to download stuff to the phone. If we made a service on one of our web servers, we could make Switcharoo pull wallpaper images from our server, rather than having to use the secret calls to pull a list of albums or a list of images on the phone. That would pull us out of "Naughty" territory and push us into "Nice" land.

Then maybe they wouldn't hate us.

A new app is now available in the Homebrew Catalog. Super Sudoku fills the gap left by the weak sudoku offerings currently available for the Pre. This guy has all the standard tools, but it also includes advanced features normally only found in desktop sudoku programs. Want to highlight all the candidates of one number? Wish you could have candidates populated and removed automatically so you can focus on the logic of the puzzle? Are you an expert that likes to give specific squares special marking so you can do advanced logic? Do you wish you had a sudoku app that would make you coffee in the morning or walk your dog for you?

Super Sudoku is the app for you! (dog not included)
